Hi everyone,

I hope you are well.

Welcome to September's content schedule! Here's a sneak peek of what you can look forward to this month:

  1. Main tutorial - Grizzlly Bearl - Oil paint  -  Available Now (today)

In this beginner-level oil painting tutorial, I will show you how to paint a realistic grizzly bear portrait using a simple three-layer oil painting process.

We will focus on:

  • Toning the canvas
  • Drawing the outline using a grid
  • Understanding a simple earth-tone oil palette
  • Blocking in the background and portrait
  • Painting long, thick fur and short detailed facial fur
  • Blending soft transitions with a mop brush
  • Building depth using transparent and opaque paint
  • Creating warm and cool colour variations
  • Refining the eye, nose and final fur details

This tutorial is ideal for artists who want to learn a simple, structured approach to painting realistic wildlife in oils from start to finish.

2. Live Demonstration - White Swan Plumage -  Thursday , September 17  10 am (ACDT)

My very first live class was around 3 years ago. During this class I demonstrated how to paint the base tones of soft white swan plumage. It has been one of the most watched live demonstration recording to date. It is time to do the demo again, using all the new technology and with closer shots of the process. I will prepare half the wing ahead of time so that I can not only demonstrate the inital layer, but also the detail layer.

I will be using acrylic for this demo due to drying time, however, the process will be very similar to how I work with oils - so can be applied to both mediums. Soft white plumage is so much fun to create once you understand the layers required and the preparation in the undertones. I will paint from the same section of the wing as I did in the original demo.

3. My Favourite Art Business Podcasts:

While I paint, I find myself with a lot of mental space for thinking, planning and learning. Along with other materials, I also pop on the odd artist business pod cast. Below is a list of my favourite ones to listen to.

The Art Biz: Hosted by Alyson Stanfield, this podcast focuses on the professional side of being an artist, covering goal-setting, marketing, pricing, and exhibition planning.
Savvy Painter: Hosted by Antrese Wood, this show features interviews with working artists discussing studio habits, mindset, and the real financial realities of sustaining a visual arts career.
Creative Pep Talk: Hosted by Andy J. Miller, this energizing podcast helps creative entrepreneurs balance artistic integrity with business success by reframing mental blocks and marketing hurdles.
Art Juice: Co-hosted by Alice Sheridan and Louise Fletcher, this UK-based podcast provides honest, relatable insight into the creative process, overcoming blocks, and running an art business.
The Professional Artist Podcast: Co-hosted by Miguel L. Mayher and Cristina Demiany, this show explores fine art and commerce, detailing how to land commissions, apply for grants, and license your work.
The Art Marketing Podcast: Hosted by Patrick Shanahan, this practical guide offers straightforward, no-nonsense advice for selling art online and offline, building audiences, and managing branding.

Hearing other artist's stories and their road maps has been an incredibly helpful element to add to my working practice. I also listen to general business marketing podcasts, ebooks and music. However, for this month, I will recommend my favourite Art Business focussed podcasts and hope you find some inspiration and motivation within them.

I look forward to seeing your creations this month. Thank you so much for being here.

If you have any questions or requests, please feel free to email me.

Kind regards

Carla Grace
